Manga Review
Contents (This part may contain Spoliers)
You are fourteen and your hormones are running wild, school is a drag and to cap it all off some government weirdos burst into your home, telling you that you are hence forth married to a twelve year old experiment human named Rizel. Rizel is a cute genetically engineered girl who requires love in order to further her development. The government want to protect her but her condition is such that black suits shadow her everywhere, even though she has no problem protecting herself. Like the Hulk, you don’t want to get her mad or you’ll be watching chaos in motion.

The secret of Rizel is closely guarded and naturally Iwaki Tomonori wants no part of this shotgun marriage, regardless of how cute she maybe. When Tomonori goes to school its not long before Rizel follows him and Tomonori is talk of the school.

From the creator of Lagoon Engine, Rizelmine is a pleasant and funny little rom com manga. Tomonori is a very moody teen who’s not afraid to show his total displeasure of the sham marriage, one which his parents sold him into for a price. I’m sure any reader can sympathize with his problem. Rizel needs love from Iwaki but humorously she gets plenty of abuse from him because her attentions aren’t wanted or reciprocated. Never before has a male unashamedly mistreat a female to such a comedic degree, not to my knowledge anyway, since it’s usually the other way round.

At times this feels like the usual rom com manga template, that so many efforts have previously been cut from, but reading further I soon found that it carves its own little niche out. Rizel is cute in her maid outfit but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before so many times. Adding other genetic copies of in the mix for Tomonori’s affections puts another twist on things, but nothing we haven’t seen in similar series like Steel Angel Kurumi or Saber Marionette. Yukiru Sugisaki’s artwork is well drawn and kawaii to pull on your heartstrings and make you love this manga more and stroke it like a kitty. There’s something about those jug like ears the characters have, that really make me want to flick them or put clothes pegs on them. However all is good here, facial expression and tantrums etc are all well realized.

"Though Rizelmine presents the same mushy Though Rizelmine presents the same mushy love stuff we’ve seen enough from Tenchi, Love Hina etc, I found it enjoyable despite this. This is a heart warming manga for the girls out there (if you like this kind of manga that is) but is still fun from the comedy angle for everyone. An average kind of title with lovely art, but to see the fun in it truly shine you’d have to wait for any future volumes. Will we get anymore of Rizelmine volumes?"

" This volume will please fans and obsessives to no end, but there’s little here that will convince doubters as to what all the fuss is about. Their loss. "
