Basilisk is still pretty much the same as you will have come to expect from the previous volumes. That said there are plenty of changes through this volume as the fighting for two episodes is confined on a boat. While one Kouga fights from the shadows, or to be more exact being the wall mover Gyobu; from within the very wells of the boat.
Tenzen proves what a nasty bastard he can be when he forces himself on Oboro under the logic of soiling her to make her his so Gennosuke wont want her. This is the volume stopper scene raising the ante and changing the nature of the show. Rape isn’t covered a lot in anime aside from the fantastic Prefect blue, but basilisk treats it with the harshness it should be.
Made to sit watch outside the cabin Katshiro is torn between his loyalties for Tenzen and the clan and Oboro above him but intervention comes in the most unlikely of hands which triggers much of the remaining events on the boat.
The fact that Tenzen gets what is coming to him for his actions just makes it all the more sweet. We also look into Gyobu’s past as to what fuels his rage against the Iga. For what is just a bunch of sometimes grotesque ninja’s having at it.
To then break the episodes, episode 16 is a prequel back story to before the pact was broken, how Gennosuke and Oboro first met: Ninja’s at rest and play, even a side story to cure Oboro’s hiccups, using some of their powers.
Basilisk from me does a great job of humanising the cast conversely as the numbers are dwindling on both Iga and Kouga the more human looking characters are turning out to be the most monstrous.

"
Basilisk remains one of the better series in my to-watch pile at the moment, but if you’re not into this show by now you’re not going to get into it at all, which is a shame as it’s much more layered and ferocious than it first looks. "
